A percentage is a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100. For example, 25% means 25 out of every 100. Percentages are used widely in daily life: calculating discounts while shopping, determining profit margins in business, computing taxes, and understanding salary or price increases.
How to Calculate Percentages
1. Finding a Percentage of a Number
To find the value of a specific percentage of any number, multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100:
Result = Number × Percentage ÷ 100
Example: What is 15% of 800? → Result = 800 × 15 ÷ 100 = 120
2. Percentage Difference Between Two Numbers
To find the percentage change between an old value and a new value:
Change % = (New - Old) ÷ Old × 100
Example: Salary changed from 5,000 to 5,750 → Increase = (5750 - 5000) ÷ 5000 × 100 = 15%
3. Increase or Discount by Percentage
To add a percentage (like a price increase) or subtract one (like a discount):
After Increase = Number × (1 + Percentage ÷ 100)After Discount = Number × (1 - Percentage ÷ 100)
Example: 30% discount on SAR 200 → 200 × (1 - 30÷100) = 200 × 0.70 = SAR 140
