Margin vs Markup - The Difference That Costs Businesses Millions
Margin vs Markup - The Difference That Costs Businesses Millions
Ask 10 shop owners about their profit margins and you'll get 10 different answers — because half of them confuse margin with markup. This confusion is one of the most expensive mistakes in retail.
The Simple Definitions
- Margin = Profit as a percentage of the selling price.
- Markup = Profit as a percentage of the cost.
Same profit. Different reference point. Very different percentages.
The Formulas
Margin (%) = (Profit / Selling Price) × 100 Markup (%) = (Profit / Cost) × 100
Worked Example
You buy a product for 100 SAR and sell it for 150 SAR. Your profit is 50 SAR.
- Margin: 50 / 150 = 33.3%
- Markup: 50 / 100 = 50%
Same product, same profit. The margin looks lower. But which one matters more?
Why Margin Matters More for Business
Margin tells you what percentage of your revenue you keep as profit. If your margin is 30%, then for every 1 SAR of revenue, 0.30 SAR is profit and 0.70 SAR covers costs.
Markup, on the other hand, tells you how much you've marked up your cost — useful for pricing decisions but misleading for profitability analysis.
The Costly Confusion
Imagine you want a "50% profit". You mark up cost by 50%. Product costs 100 SAR → selling for 150 SAR. But your actual margin is 33.3%, not 50%. That's a big gap!
To achieve a 50% margin on the same 100 SAR cost, you'd need to sell for 200 SAR — a 100% markup.
Quick Conversion Table
| Markup | Equivalent Margin |
|---|---|
| 20% | 16.7% |

| 50% | 33.3% |
| 75% | 42.9% |
| 100% | 50% |
| 200% | 66.7% |
