Zakat - The Third Pillar of Islam
Zakat is an Islamic obligation on capable Muslims, paid at 2.5% of wealth that meets the nisab threshold and has been held for a full lunar year. Zakat purifies wealth and is a right of the poor and the eight beneficiary categories specified in the Quran.
What is subject to zakat
- Cash: Bank accounts, cash in hand, deposits - anything meeting nisab and held for a year.
- Gold and silver: Stored gold (not personal-use jewelry per majority) and silver.
- Trade goods: Inventory for sale - valued at current market price.
- Stocks: Trading stocks 2.5%, long-term investment 2.5% on profits.
- Livestock and crops: Have their own nisab and rules.
Nisab - The Minimum Threshold
Nisab is the minimum threshold above which zakat becomes obligatory after one full lunar year. Cash nisab equals the value of 85g of gold (roughly SAR 20,000 at current market prices, changes with gold price). Below nisab, no zakat is due.
Eight beneficiaries of zakat
- The poor and needy
- Zakat collectors
- Those whose hearts are to be reconciled
- Freeing slaves
- Debtors
- In the path of Allah
- Stranded travelers
